Bicycle Thieves in Meran Tracked Live by Father and Daughter

Father and daughter on a joint mission: The theft alarm of their bicycle sounds. It is equipped with the BikeTrax GPS tracker. On the display, the two of them see how the bike is being stolen. They follow the GPS signal live – successfully! A little while later, with the help of the police, the detective duo from Meran catches the bicycle thieves virtually in the act, with the crime ‘weapon’ and the expensive e-bike in their possession.

“We felt like private detectives.”

Like every Wednesday, the mother’s e-bike is used by her son to go to badminton practice. The commuter e-bike is equipped with the BikeTrax GPS tracker. All four members of the family have the associated PowUnity app on their smartphones, to enable them to track the e-bike live. In case of theft, four pairs of eyes and ears can see and hear what’s going on, rather than just one pair. When the theft alarm sounded that evening, shortly before the end of the brother’s practice session, his sister pricked up her ears. She told her dad immediately, and the two of them followed the GPS signal intently. What’s going on? Has someone stolen the e-bike? Or did her brother just forget to deactivate the lock via the app before riding away?
The first 100 metres transmitted by the GPS signal conformed to the route home. But then, the direction of the signal changed towards the direction of Elisabeth Park in Meran, where it remained standing for five minutes. Father and daughter got into the car. The father says: “We felt like private detectives.” At a certain point, the signal continued to transmit from the same spot for several minutes. An apartment block. At this point, the father felt that the situation was becoming a little bit too risky, so they called the police: “The whole thing became too dangerous, even for me. After all, you don’t want to get into danger for the sake of a bicycle.”

Police catch e-bike thieves red-handed, with the booty and the crime ‘weapon’

Five minutes later, the police arrived at the building. The family showed the policeman the GPS tracker PowUnity app on the smartphone, with the GPS signal from the stolen bike. With the mobile phone as a guide, the police went into the underground parking garage of the building complex, and were indeed successful!
They were able to catch two young men with the undamaged e-bike and the bolt-cutters used to commit the crime, in their possession. One of the thieves claimed to be innocent, saying that he just happened to bump into the actual thief. The second thief took the entire blame and allowed the police to take him to the police station without putting up any resistance.

BikeTrax lands a hit

A happy ending: Only the lock of the e-bike was damaged, but the electric bike itself was safe. Thanks to the PowUnity GPS tracker that was installed in the bike, the crime could be solved quickly. Another hit for BikeTrax – this time in Meran.
